Consumer Alert: Mine Subsidence
Miller is alerting consumers that mine subsidence insurance claims will now be
paid out immediately following approval. Mine subsidence insurance claims are
paid by a state fund and therefore must go through a review process before
payment can be made.
In the past,
payments were sometimes delayed for up to 30 days once a claim was approved. A
new directive signed by Commissioner Miller, the Acting Secretary of the
Department of Environmental Protection, and the Pennsylvania State Treasury
will ensure that claims are paid without delay.
More than one
million Pennsylvania homes are atop abandoned coal or clay mines, while roughly
58,000 property owners have mine subsidence insurance. The average yearly
premium is $85.

insurance program is available at www.paMSI.org.
