Consumer Alert: Severe Weather

As we enter summer, Commissioner Miller is reminding consumers to review their homeowners and renters insurance policies ahead of potential severe summer weather.

Hotter weather often yields more powerful storms, which could potentially cause damage to your property. Reviewing your homeowners or renters policy to ensure that you have the coverage you need could save you money in the event that you need to file a claim.

The National Association of Insurance Commissioners recommends insuring your home for replacement cost rather than actual cash value. Replacement cost is the amount it would take to replace or rebuild your home or repair damages with materials of similar kind or quality without deducting for depreciation.

It’s a good idea to have a home inventory as well. In the event that your belongings are damaged by severe weather, your inventory will make it easier to file a claim on your policy. Taking photos of each item is also helpful, as the more information you provide, the easier it will be for your insurance company to determine the extent of the damage.

After a storm passes, while not compromising safety, you should file your insurance claim as soon as possible. Most companies require the prompt reporting of claims, so you should do so as soon as you are able.
