Consumer Alert: Studying Abroad

Summer may just be starting, but soon students studying abroad in the fall semester will be preparing for their time away. Commissioner Miller is offering students information to consider about health insurance while studying abroad.

You should review your existing health insurance policy to determine what kind of coverage you have while abroad before purchasing supplemental coverage. Some plans may cover costs up to a certain dollar amount, while other plans may only cover emergencies. It’s important to be aware of the limitations of your plan before you travel.

If there are gaps in your health insurance coverage, you can purchase supplemental coverage for things like non-emergency doctor visits, dental plans, etc. Your home college or university may offer a plan through your program at an additional cost, or you can find a plan from an individual provider.

When you’re travelling, it’s important to take all relevant documentation with you, including your insurance card and a copy of your policy so that you can reference it if need be. Keep these documents in a safe place and take your insurance card with you at all times, along with your identification.

Bon voyage!
