Receiving Coverage Through Your Employer

Small Businesses

If you are an employee of a small business (a business with 50 or fewer employees) your employer may or may not offer you health insurance. If your employer does offer you health insurance, keep reading. If not, visit our page for individuals who purchase insurance for themselves or their families.

If your employer offers health insurance, you may choose not to accept this coverage and pursue other options; however, if you do not take coverage from your employer, you most likely will not qualify for a tax credit if you choose to purchase through the federal health insurance marketplace. If you decline your employers plan, you may not be able to change your mind and enroll until the next years open enrollment period. Also, in many cases, the insurance offered by your employer may be the most affordable because they pay a portion of the cost. Make sure you understand your options before declining coverage from your employer.

If you lose your job, you may be able to continue your health insurance coverage for a period of time. Check with your former employer for your COBRA or mini-COBRA options. Click here for information on COBRA and mini-COBRA

Large Business

If you receive coverage through a large employer with a self-funded health insurance plan, the Pennsylvania Insurance Department does not regulate these plans and therefore is unable to provide assistance resolving disputes over coverage. The United States Department of Labor administers and enforces laws and regulations relating to employee health insurance plans, including changes made as a result of the Affordable Care Act. Visit the Department of Labor for more information on self-funded health insurance plans.
