Mental Health Parity
In Pennsylvania, we have mental health parity which means that your health insurance company is required by law to provide you with the same level of health insurance coverage for mental health and substance abuse disorder treatment as you would have for medical/surgical services.
The Insurance Department wants to help consumers and advocates understand what benefits they are entitled to for mental health and substance use disorder treatment.
The first step in understanding your benefits is understanding what kind of insurance coverage you have.
The video library below provides information to help you understand and access mental health and substance use disorder services based on the most common forms of health insurance coverage, and where to turn if the services may not be achieving parity.
Consumers who don't think they fit into any of these categories or are not sure what type of coverage they have can call the Pennsylvania Insurance Department at 1-877-881-6388 for assistance.
