Consumer Alert: Life Policy Finder Service

Commissioner Miller is alerting consumers about a new service that will help beneficiaries locate lost life insurance policies.

When a loved one passes away, there can be many loose ends to tie up. If you are unable to locate your loved one’s life insurance policy or aren’t sure whether they had one, we may be able to help.

Pennsylvania consumers can use a life insurance policy finder service developed in conjunction with the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) to help find the lost policy of a loved one. When a Pennsylvania resident files a request, life insurance companies will be asked to search their databases. If a policy is found and the inquiring party is a beneficiary, the department asks the insurer to notify the beneficiary.

While the department cannot require insurance companies to notify beneficiaries under current law, we support legislation in the General Assembly, sponsored by Rep. Marguerite Quinn, that will require companies to do so.

Information for requestors and necessary forms are available on our Life Insurance page. If you have any questions about a lost life insurance policy, you can contact the Insurance Department’s Consumer Services Bureau online or by calling 1-877-881-6388.
