Consumer Alert: Motorcycle Insurance
Commissioner
Miller is reminding consumers that as the weather gets warmer, more motorcycles
will be on the road, and drivers and motorcyclists should both exercise
caution.
According to
the U.S. Department of Transportation, 62 percent of motorcycle fatalities
occur between May and September, with 52 percent occurring on weekends.
Protective
eyewear is required to be worn by Pennsylvania law, as well as headgear for
riders 21 and younger unless they have completed a safety Penn-DOT approved
safety course or have two years of licensed riding experience.
Although
helmets are not required for riders over 21, the National Highway Traffic
Safety Administration found that riders wearing helmets are 37 percent less
likely to die in a crash and 67 percent less likely to suffer brain injuries.
If you ride a
motorcycle, discounts may be available through your insurer if you complete a
safety course, have a safe driving record, or are a member of an association,
like the Harley Owners Group. Some insurers offer discounts for
factory-installed anti-lock braking systems as well.
Additional
coverage options for custom parts and equipment, transport trailers, and
personal property may be available through your motorcycle insurance policy.
Ask your insurer for more information.
